Like it’s little brother (The Tarantula) The Black Widow is based on the Prusa i3, a proven design with tens of thousands of users all around the world. Unlike it’s little bro however the Black Widow is much larger with a MASSIVE print area and built with a much stronger frame to reduce flex when printing!
You now have a unique opportunity to own your very own 2017 Black Widow 3D Printer.
All parts of this printer are Open Source and are part of the RepRap project. In the event you may require parts these are all readily available.
The Black Widow 3D Printer consists of all metal parts in its frame construction – extruded black anodised aluminium is used for the frame material with aluminium end plates for the assemblies and ball bearing V-groove wheels for silky smooth, quite operation. There are no smooth rod, linear bearing issues you find with other printers within this price range!
The MASSIVE aluminium print bed plate is 370mm in size on the X-Axis and 250mm on the Y-Axis. The entire bed is heated by a 24-Volt power supply. This allows for much faster warm-up as well as a consistent temperature due to lower response times.
The X-Axis travel is around 380mm (side to side) for the extruder carrier (some reduction due to hot-end physical size limitations). The X-Axis plate rides on silky smooth German-made ball bearings on the X-Axis track. The Y-Axis travel has 250mm of usable distance to work with. The Y-Axis bed support plate rides on silky smooth German-made ball bearings on the Y-Axis track. The Z-axis is limited by the physical dimensions of the frame – there is around 300mm of usable distance to work with on the Z-Axis.
Distance may vary slightly depending on your assembly techniques. Both sides of the X-Axis track are lifted by a lead screw at each end. The lead screws are synchronised together using pulley gears on the screws and a pulley gear on the Z-Axis stepper motor above the frame. The Z-Axis stepper motor and the two lead screws are linked using an endless loop GT-2 belt which keeps the two lead screws turning at the same time. There are no ‘lead screw’ motor slippages as can be experienced by twin Z-Axis motor configurations as the belt does not allow the lead screws to get out of sync.
The power supply is now installed inside a power unit enclosure along with the main board and LCD panel display for local control of the printer. Installation of the power supply removes the issue of possible electrical shocks due to exposed mains power connections. The power unit enclosure has a SD Card slot to allow printing locally without connecting to a computer. Simply load a G-code file on the SD Card then select the file using the LCD panel and print.
The Hot-End of the printer is a new design which makes changing the nozzle assembly a breeze. The entirely metal nozzle/heat break assembly is held in the hot-end assembly by a clamp screw. The heat radiator on the heat break tube is screwed onto the tube for much better thermal conduction. Removal and replacement of the nozzle/heat break is simple. Simply loosen the retaining clamp screw, unscrew and remove the radiator from the heat break tube then slide the nozzle assembly out of the bottom of the hot-end mount. To put it back together is just as simple. To align the nozzle simply place a piece of paper under the nozzle, loosen the clamp screw to allow the nozzle to contact the paper and then tighten the clamp screw.
The filament feed motor assembly now uses a 5:1 reduction gear transmission to increase the torque force exerted on the filament during printing – no more “CLICK-CLICK-CLICK” of the feeder due to either partially blocked hot-end assembly or not enough force to feed the filament at the right flow-rate during printing. The entire hot-end/feeder assembly is made from metal so there is no concern for warpage due to high temperatures during long printing sessions.
The specially designed BL Touch Sensor uses proximity sensors on all three Axis of movement along with modified firmware. This reduces the possibility of sensor damage as there are no moving parts to snag or break during assembly or operation. Using proximity sensors allows for much finer control of the positional trip point detected with high accuracy and repeatability.
This is a DIY KIT (Unassembled). All you need is included in the kit (even a complimentary 8GB SD memory card) so you can get started straight away!

Whilst the Black Widow is relatively simple to assemble and set-up it does take time and patience. It is also important that you have a basic understanding of mechanical assembly techniques and electrical wiring.
Under no circumstances should you handle wiring or the power supply when this machine is plugged in and/or turned on. One should maintain a healthy respect for electricity at all times.
To avoid burns do not touch the heated print bed when operating and in particular the hot-end.
For younger users, (below 18yrs) we would strongly recommend an adult be present to supervise during assembly/set-up and also during operation.
The input mains adaptor on the power supply is selectable between 110V – 220V.
